Things I keep in my handbag for hospital days and stays. These live in there all the time, so I never have to scramble when things change fast.

* A small A5 notebook and pen

* A three-port, long two-metre charger& plug.

* A good book

* A tiny toiletry and med kit with shampoo, deodorant, perfume, moisturiser, wipes, skin care oils and basic meds

* Tissues, always needed

* A pocket atomiser to help with the dry hospital air

* Robinsons Squeezy Squash

* Sugar free electrolyte tablets

* Nurofen for those early morning headaches

* A migraine cooling patch

Everything here fits in two small clear pencil cases in my handbag. It means I am ready for the unexpected. These small things have saved me more than once.

Most of you already know that we spend a lot of time in hospitals. Over the years, I have learned that being organised does not make the days easier, but it can make them less chaotic.

I have been thinking a lot about the small things that help us through the long waits, last-minute admissions and the nights on those fab NHS plastic chairs. I want to start sharing more of that.

Private Helier Leslie Cecil Dunn, 1st Bn. Australian Machine Gun Corps.
Died of wounds 15th Nov., 1917 - Age 23
Buried: Etaples Military Cemetery, France
